Director of Communications and Engagement
This is a rare opportunity for someone who shares our values and ambition to embrace an exciting and varied senior leadership role at the very heart of one of the most critically important and impactful of public services.
A message from Sarah Crew, Chief Constable.
Avon and Somerset Police has an excellent reputation for innovation and in many ways we are quite different than other police services. I am delighted that you are interested in bringing your senior communications expertise and creative flair to our new Director of Communications and Engagement role. You will be joining a dedicated, high-performing team, recognised by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary, Fire and Rescue Services as outstanding in terms of our resource management, future planning and efficiency.
Working with the media will, of course, be important and will remain so, but we are keen to move beyond that and get on the front foot at a time when confidence in British Policing has been impacted upon by the actions of a very small but damaging number of incidents. Working closely with me and my leadership team, you will have the freedom to shape the way we engage and communicate, externally and internally, for the greater good of policing and public confidence in it.
Devising strategies which help us demonstrate to everyone the strong commitment and professionalism present at all levels within our service will be a central part of your role. You will also play a critical role in enhancing our internal engagement and communications to lever whole organisation involvement in this effort.
We are fortunate to have Mark Shelford as a supportive and well-regarded Police and Crime Commissioner. At times you will work directly with his office to ensure cohesive communications, which will extend beyond policing to other key stakeholders across our region.
We have always been an outward facing organisation, and under your leadership, the communications and engagement team will punch above its weight and become even more proactive, within our organisation and with partners locally, regionally and nationally.
You will play an essential part in improving the safety of all our communities across the region. If you have the communication and leadership skills, expertise and passion needed to successfully drive change, I would very much welcome your application.
